Contemporary
Contemporary teaches students to understand the concepts of contemporary movement such as weight, flow, momentum, & the use of gravity, while focusing on freedom of movement & spatial awareness.
Contemporary is aimed at students of about 9+ years of age.
The NZAMD Contemporary syllabus is especially popular in ballet studios, often called the ‘yoga for dancers’, it is choreographed by Ann Dewey.
Although originally informed by & borrowing from classical, modern, & jazz styles, it has since come to incorporate elements from many styles of dance, but due to its popularity amongst trained dancers & some overlap in movement type, it is often perceived as being closely related to modern dance, ballet & other classical concert dance styles.
